Turn Back Time: the anti-aging benefits of microneedlings
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves the use of tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These controlled injuries stimulate the skin's natural healing process, which in turn promotes collagen and elastin production. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that can be done at home with the right tools.

Microneedling is performed via a Derma Roller or a Derma Pen (shown above).

I had heard of microneedling but I thought it was only available in a dermatologist's office and was primarily for those with severe acne scars. When the Banish company reached out and asked if I would like to try their at-home Banish Kit 3.0, I researched the topic and discovered that microneedling is a versatile and effective skincare treatment for a wide range of concerns, including aging skin. So I agreed to try the Banish Kit 3.0 (in spite of my aversion to needles) and this is what I learned.
What does Microneedling do?
stimulates collagen production
improves skin elasticity and texture
reduces appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
diminishes hyperpigmentation and age spots
fades acne scars and stretch marks
minimizes the appearance of large pores
Benefits of Microneedling for Women Over 50
For mature women, the biggest draw to microneedling is its ability to boost collagen—a protein that declines with age. The loss of collagen leads to sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. By encouraging collagen production, microneedling can help plump the skin, smooth out fine lines, and restore a more youthful appearance.
Key Benefits for Aging Skin
Boosts collagen and elastin: These essential proteins help maintain skin's firmness and elasticity.
Reduces the appearance of fine lines: Microneedling smooths the skin’s texture, diminishing crow’s feet, laugh lines, and other age-related wrinkles.
Improves skin tone: It can help lighten hyperpigmentation and even out the complexion, reducing sun damage and dark spots.
Increases absorption of skincare products: After microneedling, your skin becomes more receptive to serums and moisturizers, maximizing their effectiveness.
My experience with Banish Microneedling Kit
When Banish sent over their microneedling kit, I was eager to try it. Their kit is designed specifically for at-home use and includes everything you need to safely and effectively microneedle your skin. The device itself has tiny needles that very gently pierce the skin, creating microchannels to stimulate collagen production.
Please note: I was gifted a Banish Kit 3.0 by the Banish company. If you click on a link in this post and make a purchase, I may make a small commission. This is no way increases your cost.
Let's Compare!
The Banisher has advantages over traditional Derma Pens and Derma Rollers. Because of its extremely thin titanium needles and because they are pressed straight down rather than rolled across your skin there is less downtime, irritation, and risk of scarring.

How to use microneedling safely at home
Cleanse your face thoroughly to remove all makeup, oil, and dirt.
Sanitize the microneedling tool with 70% isopropyl alcohol to ensure it's sterile.
Gently press the microneedling device straight into small sections of your face 3-5 times before moving on to the next small section.
Apply a soothing serum after microneedling to promote healing and hydration.
Sanitize the roller again before storing it.
I love how easy it is to incorporate microneedling into my skincare routine. After cleansing my skin in the evening, I gently press the microneedler into the areas of my face that I hope to improve. I press 3 times in one small area and then move over to the next small area. When I'm finished, I apply their serum with vitamin C and E and then my moisturizer.
This process should be done once every two weeks initially and can be done every week after your skin becomes acclimated.
You should only use a microneedling kit in the evening, allowing your skin to heal overnight. You may experience some redness and irritation. This is normal. Do not apply makeup or use harsh chemical exfoliants such as Retinol or glycolic acid after completing a microneedling treatment.
ALERT! You should only use a microneedling kit in the evening, allowing your skin time to heal overnight.
Things to watch out for
While microneedling is generally safe, especially with at-home devices like Banish’s, there are a few precautions to keep in mind:
Avoid microneedling if you have active acne: This can spread bacteria and worsen breakouts.
Don't overdo it: Stick to using the microneedling device once a week to avoid irritation.
Always sanitize the roller: To prevent infection, cleanse the device with 70% isopropyl alcohol before and after use.
Consult a dermatologist: If you have sensitive skin or any pre-existing skin conditions, always consult with a professional before starting microneedling.
